Licensing and Recognition
Pharmacy technicians are not registered health practitioners in New Zealand. The Health Practitioners Competence Assurance (HPCA) Act requires registration for pharmacists; it does not extend to pharmacy technicians. There is no statutory register, no registration examination, and no annual practising certificate required for technicians to work in New Zealand.
This is worth stating plainly: the migration barrier for a pharmacy technician is qualification recognition and securing a job offer, not passing a registration board examination. That makes the pathway more straightforward than for pharmacists, though you still need to demonstrate the competence and qualifications your employer requires.
Qualifications: An NZQA-recognised qualification at Level 4 (such as the New Zealand Certificate in Pharmacy) is the standard benchmark. If your overseas qualification is at an equivalent level, your employer or a relevant professional body can advise on recognition. NZQA's International Qualifications Assessment service is available for formal assessment.

National Occupation List (NOL): From 3 November 2025, Immigration New Zealand assesses Accredited Employer Work Visa and Job Check applications against the National Occupation List, which is progressively replacing ANZSCO for AEWV purposes. The Green List still uses ANZSCO codes. Confirm the current NOL status for Pharmacy Technician (ANZSCO 311215) directly with Immigration New Zealand or a licensed immigration adviser before applying.
