Pharmacy Technician Jobs in Australia
A practical guide for skilled migrant pharmacy technicians targeting roles in Australia, covering salary benchmarks by state, the VETASSESS skills assessment, licensing and recognition, and your visa pathway to permanent residence.
Role Snapshot
Role variants: Dispensary Technician, Hospital Pharmacy Technician, Compounding Technician, Pharmacy Dispensary Assistant (qualified)
A pharmacy technician in Australia works under the supervision of a registered pharmacist to prepare and dispense medicines, manage pharmacy stock and inventory, and support compounding and preparation. The role is technically distinct from the pharmacist: technicians handle the dispensing, labelling, stock management, and preparation side of pharmacy operations; pharmacists retain clinical responsibility for therapy review and patient counselling. Roles are available in both community and hospital pharmacy. Typical responsibilities include:
- Processing and filling prescriptions under pharmacist oversight
- Labelling and packing dispensed medicines to regulatory standards
- Managing stock, ordering, and storing medicines in line with regulatory requirements
- Supporting compounding and preparation of non-standard formulations
- Maintaining accurate dispensing and inventory records
- Customer service and general pharmacy operations in a community setting
Typical employers: Community pharmacy chains (Chemist Warehouse, Priceline Pharmacy, TerryWhite Chemmart), state public hospital pharmacies (NSW Health, Queensland Health, Victorian hospital networks), pharmaceutical wholesale and distribution companies, and compounding pharmacies.
Salary Benchmark: Pharmacy Technician in Australia
| Career Stage | Annual Salary (AUD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Entry Level (1 to 3 years) | $49,000 to $55,000 | Entry level in community pharmacy. Note: the Skills in Demand (SID) Subclass 482 Core Skills income threshold is AUD $76,515 (rising to $79,499 from 1 July 2026), which exceeds typical entry and mid-level technician pay, making employer sponsorship harder to access at this stage. |
| Mid-Level (4 to 9 years) | $55,000 to $62,000 | Experienced technician; community or hospital pharmacy. Mid-level salaries also typically fall below the SID 482 threshold. |
| Senior / Hospital (8 to 20+ years) | $62,000 to $72,000 | Senior technician or hospital pharmacy specialist; state public hospital pay scales can sit higher |
Typical pharmacy technician salaries in Australia fall below the SID 482 Core Skills income threshold of AUD $76,515 (rising to AUD $79,499 from 1 July 2026). This means employer-sponsored work visas are often not a realistic first-step pathway for technicians, and state nomination through Subclass 190 or the regional Subclass 491 is frequently the more viable route to skilled migration. Cost of living varies significantly by city, with Sydney and Melbourne the most expensive. For an independent comparison, see Numbeo (Australia).

Regional Demand: Pharmacy Technician in Australia
| State / Region | Demand Level | Key Drivers |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney (NSW) | High | Largest pharmacy market; dense community pharmacy network and major hospital pharmacy units including NSW Health facilities |
| Melbourne (VIC) | High | Strong community and hospital pharmacy demand; Victorian hospital networks are significant employers of technicians |
| Brisbane (QLD) | Moderate-High | Growing population; Queensland Health hospital pharmacies and active community pharmacy sector |
| Perth (WA) | Moderate-High | Ongoing healthcare workforce need; regional and rural WA can attract state-nominated candidates |
| Regional Australia | Moderate | Regional and rural pharmacies face ongoing staffing challenges; the 491 regional pathway may suit candidates open to smaller centres |
Licensing and Recognition
Pharmacy technicians are not registered health practitioners in Australia. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Pharmacy Board of Australia register pharmacists; the registration regime does not extend to pharmacy technicians. There is no statutory register, no registration examination, and no annual practising certificate required for technicians to work in Australia.
This matters for migration: the gateway for a pharmacy technician is the VETASSESS skills assessment, not a registration board. Once your skills assessment is satisfactory and you meet the visa requirements, there is no additional licensing body standing between you and employment.
Skills assessment for migration (VETASSESS): VETASSESS is the designated assessing body for Pharmacy Technician (ANZSCO 311215). VETASSESS Group D assessment requires an AQF Certificate IV (or overseas equivalent) in a highly relevant field plus relevant post-qualification employment. Candidates without a Certificate IV qualification can also qualify through three years of relevant work experience in a closely related field. Complete your VETASSESS assessment before applying for any points-based skilled migration visa.
ANZSCO mapping: ANZSCO 311215 is the dedicated code for Pharmacy Technician. This is the code used for VETASSESS assessment and visa applications.
Visa Pathway: Pharmacy Technician in Australia
Skills assessment required: Yes. VETASSESS assesses Pharmacy Technician (ANZSCO 311215). Complete this before applying for any skilled migration visa.
| Visa | Detail |
|---|---|
| Skills in Demand, Subclass 482 (Core Skills stream) | Employer-sponsored work visa. Eligibility depends on Pharmacy Technician appearing on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Importantly, the income threshold (AUD $76,515, rising to $79,499 from 1 July 2026) exceeds typical technician pay, so employer sponsorship is often difficult to access for this occupation. Verify CSOL inclusion and income feasibility with a registered migration agent before pursuing this route. Home Affairs: Subclass 482 |
| Skilled Nominated Visa, Subclass 190 | State or territory nomination; points-based permanent residence. This is frequently the most realistic skilled pathway for pharmacy technicians given the income threshold challenge on Subclass 482. States with ongoing healthcare workforce needs, including Queensland and Western Australia, have nominated allied health and pharmacy support workers in previous rounds. Home Affairs: Subclass 190 |
| Skilled Work Regional Visa, Subclass 491 | For regional Australia. Five-year provisional visa with a pathway to permanent residence. Lower points threshold than the 189; suited to candidates open to working outside major metro centres. Regional and rural pharmacies regularly have staffing gaps. Home Affairs: Subclass 491 |
| Skilled Independent Visa, Subclass 189 | Points-based, no employer sponsor or state nomination required. Permanent residence directly. Requires a VETASSESS skills assessment and an Expression of Interest via SkillSelect. Invitation thresholds vary; confirm current points requirements. Home Affairs: Subclass 189 |
Given that technician salaries frequently sit below the SID 482 income threshold, state nomination (190) or the regional route (491) is the pathway to plan around for most pharmacy technician candidates. A migration agent familiar with healthcare occupation lists can advise on which states are currently inviting in this occupation.
Are You Competitive? Readiness Signals

- Familiarity with stock management, ordering systems, and medicine storage practices to Australian regulatory standards
