Structural engineers are in consistent demand across Australia, driven by residential high-rise construction, major infrastructure projects, and a growing urban renewal pipeline. Unlike NZ, Australian structural engineering is less dominated by seismic considerations (though earthquake loading still applies under AS 1170.4, particularly in SA and WA) and more shaped by large-scale construction volumes and the complexity of high-rise timber and concrete hybrid structures in the major cities. The 2032 Brisbane Olympics infrastructure pipeline and state-led housing acceleration programmes are adding multi-year project demand.
- Structural design of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings
- High-rise concrete and steel frame design
- Infrastructure structural engineering: bridges, retaining walls, tunnels, marine structures
- Structural assessment and remediation of existing buildings
- Facade and cladding engineering
- Peer review and structural certification for building approvals
Typical employers: Aurecon, Arup, WSP, GHD, Jacobs, Stantec, Mott MacDonald (major consulting firms); Bonacci Group, Taylor Thomson Whitting (TTW), Northrop Consulting Engineers (Australian specialist firms); major construction contractors (Lendlease, Multiplex, John Holland) for in-house or embedded structural roles.
Salary Benchmark
Typical Range: $90,000 – $175,000+ AUD per year, depending on experience, firm size, and location.
- Graduate / early career (0–3 years): $80,000–$95,000
- Mid-career (4–9 years): $100,000–$140,000
- Senior / principal engineer: $145,000–$175,000+

Where Demand Is Strongest
- Sydney (NSW) — Australia’s largest structural engineering market. High-rise residential and commercial construction, infrastructure renewal (Sydney Metro, WestConnex), and large commercial development drive consistent demand. Most major consulting firms have their largest AU office in Sydney.
- Melbourne (VIC) — Strong residential and commercial construction market. Suburban Rail Loop and major urban renewal precincts (Arden, Fishermans Bend) creating long-run structural engineering demand. Several strong local consulting firms.
- Brisbane / South East QLD — Olympics 2032 infrastructure (venues, transport, athlete accommodation) generating sustained pipeline. Cross River Rail and SEQ residential growth also active. RPEQ registration required for independent structural engineering work in QLD.
- Perth (WA) — Resources infrastructure, residential construction, and Burswood to Armadale rail. Smaller market than east coast but strong demand with less competition. FIFO structural roles for mining infrastructure exist (elevated conveyors, process plant structures).
- Adelaide (SA) — Defence infrastructure and submarine programme-linked construction. SA requires professional engineering licensing (PEL) for certain structural engineering work — check SA Engineering Board requirements.
Licensing & Professional Registration
Engineers Australia Skills Assessment: Mandatory for skilled migration visas. Engineers Australia (EA) assesses whether your qualifications are comparable to an Australian engineering degree. Allow 3–6 months. EA membership (MIEAust) is the pathway to CPEng.
State registration requirements:
- Queensland — RPEQ: Legally required for independent structural engineering work. Mandatory if certifying designs or supervising without a registered engineer present. Apply via BPEQ. Typically requires EA membership plus relevant experience.
- South Australia — Professional Engineering Licensing: SA requires Professional Engineer Licensing for certain disciplines including structural. Check requirements at Engineers Board of SA.
- NSW, VIC, WA: No mandatory state registration for structural engineers, but CPEng is strongly expected for senior, certifying, and client-facing roles.
NZ CPEng holders: Engineers Australia and Engineering New Zealand have a mutual recognition arrangement. NZ CPEngs can seek EA recognition through a streamlined process.

Migrant Readiness Signals
- EA assessment in progress: Begin the Engineers Australia assessment before your job search. The timeline is known to employers and the question comes up early in interviews. Being “in progress” is significantly better than not having started
- Australian loading standards awareness: AS 1170 (structural loading) and AS 3600 (concrete structures), AS 4100 (steel structures) are the key references. Know how these compare to the standards you have worked under and be ready to discuss it
- Software proficiency: ETABS, STAAD.Pro, Revit (structural), and RAM are common in AU. Space Gass (structural analysis) is widely used by Australian firms. If you use different software, map your skills explicitly
- High-rise experience valued: Australian consulting firms, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, work heavily in multi-storey residential and commercial. Highlight floor system design, post-tensioning experience, and transfer structures if relevant
- QLD RPEQ plan: If targeting Brisbane or QLD, address your plan to obtain RPEQ on your CV. Employers know it is required and will factor the timeline into their decision
- References from project engineers or directors: Two or three professional references who can speak to your technical design capability and project delivery are essential for senior or mid-career roles in AU
Where to Find Roles
- SEEK AU — search: “Structural Engineer” by state; filter by experience level for mid-career or senior roles
- LinkedIn — follow Arup, Aurecon, WSP, Bonacci Group, TTW; connect with structural team leads directly
- Engineers Australia Job Board — structural-specific listings from firms actively hiring EA-assessed candidates
- Hays Australia and Michael Page Engineering — specialist engineering recruiters with consulting firm pipelines
Direct to employer: Aurecon, Arup, WSP, Stantec, and Bonacci Group all accept direct applications. Specialist Australian firms like TTW and Northrop are worth approaching directly — they hire experienced structural engineers and are less likely to appear on SEEK than the major consultancies.
A note on cold applications: In Australian structural engineering, many mid-career and senior roles are filled through recruiter relationships and direct referrals from within the profession. If you are not sure how your structural engineering background will read to an Australian employer, upload your CV for no-cost, practical feedback — Tate typically responds within one business day.
What to expect: For skilled migrant structural engineers, a realistic job search timeline in Australia is 4–10 weeks from a well-prepared starting point, assuming the EA assessment is underway. Candidates with high-rise design experience and strong software skills move faster. The construction pipeline in Sydney and Melbourne is sustained — well-positioned candidates are not waiting long.
