Australia’s construction boom and ageing infrastructure have created a sustained plumbing shortage across every state. Residential housing construction, high-rise commercial development, water infrastructure upgrades, and large-scale resource sector projects all require licensed plumbers. As with electricians, the critical planning point for migrant plumbers is that you cannot practise without a state-issued licence — and each state manages this separately.
- Residential rough-in and fit-out plumbing for new builds and renovations
- Commercial and industrial plumbing and mechanical services
- Water supply and drainage system installation and repair
- Gasfitting (often a combined licence in Australia)
- Roofing plumbing (gutters, downpipes, stormwater)
- Large-scale civil plumbing for infrastructure and resource projects
Typical employers: Plumbing contracting firms (AE Smith, Fredon, Ventia, Programmed); residential builders and project home companies; civil infrastructure contractors; mining and resources operators (FIFO sanitary and mechanical services).
Salary Benchmark
Typical Range: $72,000 – $120,000+ AUD per year for standard licensed roles. FIFO and mining roles regularly pay more.
- Entry / newly licensed (0–3 years): $68,000–$82,000
- Experienced licensed plumber (4–8 years): $85,000–$110,000
- Foreman / leading hand / plumbing contractor: $110,000–$125,000+
- FIFO / large civil / mechanical services: $95,000–$140,000+

Where Demand Is Strongest
- Queensland — Brisbane Olympic infrastructure, South East QLD residential growth, and North Queensland resource projects all driving sustained demand. RPEQ not required for plumbing. QLD Housing infrastructure pipeline is one of the largest in the country.
- New South Wales — Sydney residential high-rise, infrastructure projects (WestConnex, Sydney Metro), and commercial construction generate strong commercial plumbing demand. Largest state market by volume.
- Western Australia — Mining sector mechanical services and resource project plumbing. Perth residential demand also strong. FIFO roles for large infrastructure projects in the Pilbara and Goldfields.
- Victoria — Melbourne construction, Suburban Rail Loop, and North East Link creating significant commercial plumbing demand. Victorian plumbing licence has mutual recognition with most other states.
- Regional Australia — Housing shortages in regional areas across all states create demand. Regional plumbers often in high demand with faster pathways to self-employment.
Licensing & Professional Registration
State licence: Mandatory. You cannot perform plumbing work in Australia without a state-issued plumbing licence. Each state regulates separately, but mutual recognition between states is well-established once you hold one licence.
Step 1 — TRA Skills Assessment (for visa):
- Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) is the designated assessing body for ANZSCO 334111. Required for skilled migration visas. Allow 3–6 months — submit well before your visa application.
- You will need: trade certificates, apprenticeship records (or equivalent overseas training evidence), and proof of work experience. Organise these before submitting.
Step 2 — State plumbing licence (to work):
- NSW: Plumber’s Licence via NSW Fair Trading. Overseas applicants assessed via TRA pathway or skills assessment with NSW Fair Trading directly.
- VIC: Plumbing Licence via Victorian Building Authority (VBA). Overseas applicants must demonstrate equivalent qualifications and experience.
- QLD: Plumbing Occupational Licence via Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC).
- WA: Plumber’s Licence via Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS).
Gasfitting: In Australia, gasfitting is often a separate endorsement on the plumbing licence. If you have gasfitting experience, declare it — it is an in-demand speciality and can strengthen your visa points score and employability.

Migrant Readiness Signals
- TRA assessment submitted before visa application: The TRA assessment is the gateway to the visa. Without it, nothing moves. Get this started early and keep copies of every document you submit
- Trade documents organised: Apprenticeship completion certificates, trade qualifications, and employment history in plumbing are all required. If any documents are in another language, get certified translations done before applying
- Australian plumbing standards awareness: AS/NZS 3500 (Plumbing and Drainage) is the Australian standard. Employers will expect you to acknowledge the difference between your home country’s standards and AS/NZS 3500, and demonstrate how you would bridge the gap
- Gasfitting qualification documented: If you have gasfitting experience or certification, list it explicitly. It adds points-score value and employer appeal
- Safety white card: The General Construction Induction (White Card) is required to work on Australian construction sites. It can be obtained online before arrival and should be on your CV
- Target state identified: Different states have different licensing processes and timelines. Knowing which state you are targeting lets you contact the relevant licensing authority and understand exactly what they require from overseas applicants
Where to Find Roles
- SEEK AU — search: “Plumber” or “Mechanical Services Plumber” by state; also “FIFO Plumber” for resources sector
- LinkedIn — useful for reaching commercial plumbing contractors and project managers at major construction firms
- Hays Australia — active in trades recruitment across all states, including resources sector placement
- Trade Mutt Job Board and hipages — trade-specific platforms used by smaller contractors and residential firms
Direct to employer: AE Smith, Fredon, Ventia, and Programmed all operate large mechanical services and plumbing divisions. QBCC-listed and state-licensed applicants with relevant experience should approach their workforce teams directly, particularly for commercial and civil project work.
A note on cold applications: In the plumbing trades, many roles are filled through labour hire and word of mouth. Registering with a specialist trades recruiter before you arrive — once your TRA assessment is in progress — gives employers confidence about your timeline. If you are not sure how your background will read to an Australian employer, upload your CV for no-cost, practical feedback — Tate typically responds within one business day.
“The licensing process was more straightforward than I expected once I understood what each state actually required. The hard part was gathering all my old trade documents from home — that took longer than the assessment itself.”
What to expect: For internationally trained plumbers, TRA assessment plus state licensing runs 6–9 months end-to-end for a well-prepared candidate. Once licensed, job offers in Australia typically follow within 2–4 weeks of active searching — the plumbing shortage is real and employers move quickly when they find a licensed, experienced applicant. TEFI’s service fee is significant, but an Australian plumber’s salary more than covers the investment within months.
