Optometrist Roles in New Zealand
This page is a practical guide for overseas-qualified optometrists considering a move to New Zealand. It covers registration, employment settings, salary benchmarks, regional demand, and immigration pathways. New Zealand has a genuine and sustained need for optometrists, driven by an ageing population, increasing rates of myopia and other refractive conditions, and the concentration of optometric services in urban centres that leaves regional areas consistently underserved.
Role Snapshot
ANZSCO Code: 251411 — Optometrist
NZR Code: NZR-151
Country: New Zealand
Role Variants: Optometrist, Therapeutic Optometrist, Paediatric Optometrist, Low Vision Specialist, Contact Lens Specialist
Green List Status: Optometrist (ANZSCO 251411) is on the NZ Green List Tier 1, meaning eligible candidates may apply for a resident visa without first completing 24 months on an AEWV. Check current conditions at Immigration NZ Green List.
Registration Body: Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board (ODOB) under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance (HPCA) Act 2003.
Optometrists in New Zealand conduct eye examinations, diagnose and manage ocular conditions, prescribe corrective lenses, and where therapeutically certified, prescribe ocular medications. Therapeutic optometrists can manage a broader range of conditions independently, reducing referral burden on ophthalmologists. Typical employers include Specsavers, OPSM (Luxottica), Visique, independent optometry practices, DHB/Health NZ community eye health services, and regional hospital outpatient departments.
Salary Ranges
| Level | Setting | Approximate Range |
|---|---|---|
| New graduate / overseas arrival (non-therapeutic) | Employed, retail or group practice | $75,000 – $95,000 |
| Experienced optometrist (2-5 years NZ) | Employed, retail chain or independent | $95,000 – $120,000 |
| Therapeutic optometrist | Employed or part-owner, any setting | $110,000 – $140,000 |
| Practice owner / principal optometrist | Self-employed or partnership | $130,000 – $200,000+ |
| Regional / rural locum optometrist | Contract, rotational | $120,000 – $160,000 |
Retail chain optometrists (Specsavers, OPSM) often receive additional performance bonuses tied to consultation volume and optical dispensing. Independent practices typically offer a higher base but less structured bonus component. Regional and rural locum work attracts premium rates due to access difficulty and the critical nature of services in underserved areas.
Regional Demand
Auckland: Largest market by practice count. Full-scope retail, group, and independent optometry. Competitive for roles but strong pipeline of positions across Specsavers, OPSM, and independent practices.
Wellington: Consistent demand. Good range of retail and independent settings. Health NZ eye health services generate some employed optometrist roles.
Canterbury (Christchurch): Growing optometry market with strong independent practice sector. Good lifestyle conditions and lower cost of living than Auckland.
Regional centres and rural NZ: Highest demand relative to supply. Rotorua, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Whanganui, Invercargill, and rural South Island all have documented optometrist shortages. Regional roles attract relocation support, higher base salaries, and often provide more varied clinical scope than urban retail settings.
Licensing and Registration
Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board (ODOB): Registration under the HPCA Act 2003 is mandatory before practising in NZ. ODOB assesses overseas qualifications for general scope registration. Most applicants from Australia (AHPRA-registered), UK (GOC-registered), and comparable countries apply via the overseas-qualified pathway.
ANZCORS: The Australia and New Zealand Committee on Optometric Registration and Standards sets the competency standards used by both countries. ODOB uses ANZCORS assessment for overseas-qualified applicants whose qualifications are not directly recognised.
Annual Practising Certificate (APC): Must be renewed annually. Requires evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) and fitness to practise declaration.
Therapeutic Endorsement: Allows optometrists to prescribe Schedule 2 and 3 ocular medications independently. Granted by ODOB on application after completing the NZ College of Optometrists’ therapeutic examination (or equivalent overseas credential assessment). Strongly recommended for career progression in NZ.
Immigration Pathways
Green List Tier 1 (Straight to Residence): Optometrist (ANZSCO 251411) is on the NZ Green List Tier 1. This means eligible overseas optometrists with a job offer from an accredited employer and ODOB registration (or eligible for it) can apply directly for a resident visa without completing 24 months on a work visa first. This is one of the fastest residence pathways available in NZ. Confirm current salary thresholds and eligibility conditions at Immigration New Zealand.
Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV): If you prefer to arrive on a work visa before applying for residence, the AEWV is available with a job offer from an INZ-accredited employer at or above the median wage threshold.

Readiness Signals
Strong indicators: recognised optometry degree and current registration in good standing with a recognised overseas regulatory body (AHPRA, GOC, or comparable); 2+ years post-qualification clinical experience; therapeutic endorsement or willingness to obtain it; employer references confirming clinical competence and patient management scope. Preparation steps: initiate ODOB registration assessment before your job search (it takes time); confirm your overseas qualification’s recognition pathway with ODOB; research the therapeutic endorsement process and timeline.

Where to Find Roles
- SEEK NZ – search optometrist, therapeutic optometrist, locum optometrist
- Trade Me Jobs – independent practices and regional roles
- NZ Association of Optometrists (NZAO) – job board and member directory
- LinkedIn – group practice and retail chain roles
- Health NZ Careers – employed optometrist roles in DHB/community settings
Specsavers and OPSM recruit internationally and both hold INZ accreditation. Direct approaches to their national recruitment teams are productive. Independent practices in regional NZ often advertise locally; approaching practice owners directly via the NZAO directory is effective.
