Where Demand Is Strongest
HVAC demand in NZ is strongest in commercial and industrial markets:
- Auckland — Largest commercial building stock; highest concentration of HVAC technician jobs
- Wellington — Government and commercial buildings; consistent demand for HVAC maintenance
- Christchurch — New commercial builds and retrofit projects drive HVAC demand
- Nationwide — Industrial refrigeration roles exist in food processing and cold storage across all regions
Licensing & Professional Registration
Mandatory licence: Yes (for refrigerant handling) — handling fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases/refrigerants) requires a Refrigerant Handling Licence under the Ozone Layer Protection Act, administered by Ministry for the Environment.
For broader HVAC installation work, a Limited Certificate under the PGDB may be required for gas-connected HVAC equipment. Check with the PGDB for your specific scope of work.
Overseas qualification recognition: Assessment is done case by case. Refrigerant handling licences from Australia may be recognised; others require NZ assessment. Contact MfE for refrigerant licensing and PGDB for any gasfitting overlap.
Immigration Pathway
Licensing required to work: See Licensing section above. ANZSCO 342111 is on the Green List Tier 2.
Visa options:
- Green List Tier 2 — Work to Residence — with a job offer from an accredited employer, a qualified hvac technician can apply for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) and then residency after 24 months.
Green List — Immigration New Zealand - Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) — requires a job offer from an INZ-accredited employer.
Immigration New Zealand — Work Visas - Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa — points-based pathway. Green List Tier 2 status supports a strong points claim.
Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa
For most of our clients, the job offer sets into motion a clear migration process touching upon immigration compliance, timing, city selection, quality of life, and professional opportunities — the offer is the trigger for all of it.

Migrant Readiness Signals
NZ employers look for hvac technician candidates who demonstrate:
- Refrigerant handling licence: This is mandatory for almost all HVAC roles. If you hold an equivalent overseas licence, contact MfE early to understand the recognition process
- System type experience: Specify the brands and system types you have worked on (Daikin, Mitsubishi, Carrier, Trane, chiller systems). NZ employers match candidates to their equipment fleet
- BMS and controls experience: Building management system (BMS) integration experience is increasingly valued in NZ commercial HVAC roles
- Energy efficiency focus: NZ’s decarbonisation agenda means heat pump and energy-efficient HVAC experience is a selling point
- Commissioning documentation: The ability to produce commissioning reports, O&M manuals, and as-built documentation is expected at senior level

A note on cold applications: In New Zealand, many roles are filled through referral, recruiter relationships, or candidates already known to the employer — a cold application rarely lands. To be the exception, you need an exceptional profile and direct employer contact. If you are not sure how your background will read to a NZ employer, upload your CV for no-cost, practical feedback on how your background reads to NZ employers — Tate typically responds within one business day.
What to expect: For skilled migrant HVAC technicians, a realistic job search timeline in New Zealand is 2–4 months from a well-prepared starting point, with refrigerant licensing running in parallel. TEFI’s service fee is significant, but securing an HVAC role in NZ months earlier more than covers the investment.
